Right now you are reading English. That means that you are using your brain in a very active way. Reading is a very active process. It is true that the writer does a lot of work, but the reader also has to work hard. When you read a text, you have to do some or all of these:

imagine a scene in your head

understand clearly what the writer is trying to say

agree or disagree with the writer

Advantages of Reading

When you learn a language, listening, speaking and writing are important, but reading can also be very helpful. There are many advantages associated with reading, including:

Learning Vocabulary In Context

You will usually encounter new words when you read. If there are too many new words for you, then the level is too high and you should read something simpler. But if there are, say, a maximum of five new words per page, you will learn this vocabulary easily. You may not even need to use a dictionary because you can guess the meaning from the rest of the text (from the context). Not only do you learn new words, but you see them being used naturally.

A Model For Writing

When you read, it gives you a good example for writing. Texts that you read show you structures and expressions that you can use when you write.

Seeing "Correctly Structured" English

When people write, they usually use "correct" English with a proper grammatical structure. This is not always true when people speak. So, by reading you see and learn grammatical English naturally.

Working At Your Own Speed

You can read as fast or as slowly as you like. You can read ten pages in 30 minutes, or take one hour to explore just one page. It doesn"t matter. The choice is yours. You cannot easily do this when speaking or listening. This is one of the big advantages of reading because different people work at different speeds.

Personal Interest

If you choose something to read that you like, it can actually be interesting and enjoyable. For example, if you like to read about football in your own language, why not read about football in English? You will get information about football and improve your English at the same time.

Five Tips for Reading

Tip #1

Try to read at the right level. Read something that you can (more or less) understand. If you need to stop every three words to look in a dictionary, it is not interesting for you and you will soon be discouraged.

Tip #2

Make a note of new vocabulary. If there are four or five new words on a page, write them in your vocabulary book. But you don"t have to write them while you read. Instead, try to guess their meaning as you read; mark them with a pen; then come back when you have finished reading to check in a dictionary and add them to your vocabulary book.

Tip #3

Try to read regularly. For example, read for a short time once a day. Fifteen minutes every day is better than two hours every Sunday. Fix a time to read and keep to it. For example, you could read for fifteen minutes when you go to bed, or when you get up, or at lunchtime.

Tip #4

Be organised. Have everything ready:

something to read

a marker to highlight difficult words

a dictionary

your vocabulary book

a pen to write down the new words

Tip #5

Read what interests YOU. Choose a magazine or book about a subject that you like.

My mother used to ask me what is the most important part of the body.

Through the years I would take a guess at what I thought was the correct answer. When I was younger, I thought sound was very important to us as humans, so I said, "My ears, Mommy. " She said, "No. Many people are deaf. But you keep thinking about it and I will ask you again soon."

Several years passed before she asked me again. Since making my first attempt, I had contemplated the correct answer. So this time I told her, Mommy, sight is very important to everybody, so it must be our eyes." She looked at me and told me, "You are learning fast, but the answer is not correct because there are many people who are blind."

Stumped again, I continued my quest for knowledge and over the years, Mother asked me a couple more times and always her answer was, "No. But you are getting smarter every year, my child."

Then last year, my grandpa died. Everybody was hurt. Everybody was crying. Even my father cried. I remember that especially because it was only the second time I saw him cry. My Mom looked at me when it was our turn to say our final good-bye to Grandpa. She asked me, " Do you know the most important body part yet, my dear?" I was shocked when she asked me this now. I always thought this was a game between her and me.

She saw the confusion on my face and told me, "This question is very important. It shows that you have really lived in your life. For every body part you gave me in the past, I have told you were wrong and I have given you an example why. But today is the day you need to learn this important lesson." She looked down at me as only a mother can. I saw her eyes well up with tears. She said, "My dear, the most important body part is your shoulder. "

I asked, "Is it because it holds up my head?"

She replied, "No, it is because it can hold the head of a friend or a loved one when they cry. Everybody needs a shoulder to cry on sometime in life, my dear. I only hope that you have enough love and friends that you will always have a shoulder to cry on when you need it."

Then and there I knew the most important body part is not a selfish one. It is sympathetic to the pain of others. People will forget what you said ... People will forget what you did ... But people will NEVER forget how you made them FEEL.

The Story of Four Wives

Once upon a time there was a rich King who had four wives. He loved the 4th wife the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to the finest of delicacies. He gave her nothing but the best.

He also loved the 3rd wife very much and was always showing her off to neighboring kingdoms. However, he feared that one day she would leave him for another.

He also loved his 2nd wife. She was his confident and was always kind, considerate and patient with him. Whenever the King faced a problem, he could confide in her, and she would help him get through the difficult times.

The King"s 1st wife was a very loyal partner and had made great contributions in maintaining his wealth and kingdom. However, he did not love the first wife. Although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her!

One day, the King fell ill and he knew his time was short. He thought of his luxurious life and wondered, "I now have four wives with me, but when I die, I"ll be all alone."

Thus, he asked the 4th wife, "I have loved you the most, endowed you with the finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I"m dying, will you follow me and keep me company?" "No way!", replied the 4th wife, and she walked away without another word. Her answer cut like a sharp knife right into his heart.

The sad King then asked the 3rd wife, "I have loved you all my life. Now that I"m dying, will you follow me and keep me company?" "No! ", replied the 3rd wife. "Life is too good! When you die, I"m going to remarry!" His heart sank and turned cold.

He then asked the 2nd wife, "I have always turned to you for help and you"ve always been there for me. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?" "I"m sorry, I can"t help you out this time!", replied the 2nd wife. "At the very most, I can only walk with you to your grave." Her answer struck him like a bolt of lightning, and the King was devastated.

Then a voice called out: "I"ll go with you. I"ll follow you no matter where you go." The King looked up, and there was his first wife. She was very skinny as she suffered from malnutrition and neglect. Greatly grieved, the King said, "I should have taken much better care of you when I had the chance!"

In truth, we all have the 4 wives in our lives: Our 4th wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in making it look good, it will leave us when we die.

Our 3rd wife is our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, it will all go to others.

Our 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how much they have been there for us, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave.

And our 1st wife is our Soul. Often neglected in pursuit of wealth, power and pleasures of the world. However, our Soul is the only thing that will follow us wherever we go. Cultivate, strengthen and cherish it now, for it is the only part of us that will follow us to the throne of God and continue with us throughout Eternity. 

چهار همسر

روزی روزگاری پادشاهی وجود داشت که چهار زن داشت.پادشاه همسر چهارمش را بیشتر از همه دوست داشت. و با لباس های گران قیمت به او عشق می ورزید و بهترین ها را به او می داد. او همسر سومش را نیز بسیار دوست داشت و همیشه او را به رخ قلمرو های پادشاهی اطراف می کشید. با این وجود می ترسید که روزی او تنهایش بگذارد. پادشاه همسر دومش را نیز دوست داشت. و برایش محرم اسرار، مهربان و صبور بود. هر وقت با مشکلی روبرو می شد می توانست مشکلاتش را با او در میان بگذارد تا او در شرایط سخت کمکش کند. در ابتدا شریکی با وفا برایش بود و او را در مال و دارایی و مسایل حکومتی مشارکت می داد . اگر چه او پادشاه را شدیدا دوست می داشت با این وجود او همسر اولش را دوست نداشت و به به او اعتنای چندانی نمی گذاشت.

روزی پادشاه بیمار شد و می دانست که وقتش بسیار کم است، به زندگی پر تجملش فکر می کرد وبا خود می گفت: من اکنون 4 همسر با خود دارم و وقتی بمیرم تنها نخواهم شد. بنابر این او چهارمین همسرش را فرا خواند: من تو را بیشتر از همه دوست دارم من بهترین جامه ها را به تو هدیه کردم و ببیشترین توجه ها را به تو کردم. اکنون من در حال مردن هستم آیا تو با من می آیی و مرا همراهی می کنی.؟ چهارمین پاسخ داد :"به هیچ وجه" و بدون گفتن حتی یک کلمه از او دور شد پاسخ او همچون خنجری در قلب پادشاه فرو رفت، پادشاه اندوهگین همسر سومش را فرا خواند :من در تمام طول زندگی ام تو را دوست داشتم اکنون که من در حال مردن هستم آیا تو با من می آیی و مرا همراهی می کنی؟ همسر سومش پاسخ داد:نه زندگی خیلی خوب است وقتی تو بمیری من دوباره ازدواج خواهم کرد. قلب پادشاه رنجور و دلسرد شد. سپس همسر دومش را فراخواند:من همیشه برای کمک به تو آماده و حاضر بودم اکنون که من در حال مردن هستم آیا تو با من می آیی و مرا همراهی می کنی؟ همسر دومش پاسخ داد: متاسفم از من کمکی برنمی آید. نهایت کمک من این است که تو را تا کنار قبرت همراهی کنم. جوابش مثل صاعقه ای بر پادشاه فرد آمد و او خوار شد. سپس صدایی فریاد بر آورد: من اینجا را با تو ترک خواهم کرد. با تو خواهم آمد مهم نیست که تو کجا می روی! پادشاه نگاهی انداخت و همسر اولش را دید او که از سوء تغذیه رنج می برد لاغر و استخوانی شده بود. پادشاه با اندوهی فراوان گفت:من باید زمانی که فرصت زندگی داشتم بیشتر به تو توجه می کردم  .

در حقیقت ما در زندگیمان چهار همسر داریم. چهارمین همسر ما بدن ماست مهم نیست که چقدر وقت و تلاش صرفش کنیم تا خوب به نظر برسد. وقتی ما بمیریم ما ر ا ترک خواهد گفت. سومین همسر ما مال و مقام و ثروت ماست. وقتی ما بمیریم آن نیز به سایر افراد می رسد. دومین همسر ماخانواده و دوستان ما هستند  . مهم نیست که چقدر با ما بوده اند. نهایتا می توانند ما را تا سر قبر همراهی کنند و اولین همسر ما روح ماست که اغلب در پس ثروت، قدرت و شادی های دنیوی پنهان شده است  .
با همه وجود روح ما تنها چیزی است که هر جا برویم با ما می آید بنا براین هم اکنون به آن توجه کنید و آن را قوت ببخشید و به آن عشق بورزید چرا که تنها همراهی است که تا ابد در کنار ما خواهد ماند.
